Four years ago, a select committee along with the The Lung Association of Newfoundland and Labrador organized a golf tournament, in memory of the miners who lost their lives in the St. Lawrence Mines, to raise funds for Air Quality. Funds generated from this tournament are used primarily to raise awareness of the necessity of good healthy air in the workplace, at home, in schools and generally wherever people congregate. Educational materials regarding air quality have been distributed throughout the province to schools and other institution over the last few years.
St. Lawrence was chosen specifically because of the obvious and devastating impacts that unhealthy working conditions have had upon the miners who worked in the mines. It was lung diseases from contaminated air that led to the early deaths of so many miners. The committee felt that, since we were using the St. Lawrence example, they should do something specifically for the community and even more specifically for the young people of the town. In addition to enabling all graduates of St. Lawrence Academy to be aware of the necessity of good air quality, this project also facilitates their attachments to their culture and heritage.
